Visually extending the esplanade of the Invalides, the Alexandre III Bridge in the heart of Paris connects the Grand and Small Palaces on the right bank of the Seine with the Invalides on its left bank.
The Alexander III Bridge was built at the end of the nineteenth century as part of a national project for the 1900 World's Fair. She also initiated the birth of the Dorset railway Station, the Grand and Small Palaces in Paris. The exposition was to take place simultaneously on two banks of the Seine, and the construction of the bridge would allow visitors to cross the river freely and with great comfort. In addition to the direct temporary purpose, the construction of the bridge solved the acute infrastructural issue of densely populated Paris.
The concept of the bridge project was developed by two architects Rezal and Albi. The original supporting structure was assembled at the Creusot factory, and only then recreated in its usual place for us.
One of the main requirements for the construction was that the Alexander III Bridge should not block the majestic view of the Champs-Elysees and the Invalides. That is why a single arched structure with a length of 107.5 meters was chosen for the bridge, decorated with two viaducts of 22.5 meters each. The total length of the building was 154 meters, respectively, its width reaches 45 meters, which for 1896 was a true achievement of architectural and engineering thought. The maximum height above the water reaches 6 meters.
The bridge is made in the architectural style of beaux arts, which was fashionable at the time. Its vaults and balustrades are lavishly decorated with lampposts and various sculptures of angels and nymphs, pegasi and other mythical heroes. At each end of the Alexander III Bridge, 17-meter gilded bronze statues on granite columns stand majestically. Every detail of the bridge's ornament was created by completely different sculptures and artists, but united by the common idea of the Russian-French commonwealth. So, the nymph of the Seine with the coat of arms of France, and her sister, but with the coat of arms of the Russian Empire, regally decorate the central part of the bridge.
The first stone of this magnificent building was laid by Tsar Nicholas II in 1896. It owes its name to Nicholas II's beloved father, Alexander III. As a sign of confirmation of good intentions and for the sake of strengthening political positions on the world stage, the twin brother of the Troitsky Bridge was erected in the very center of St. Petersburg.
