Tooth Sensitivity

What is Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is a common problem that affects millions of people. Basically, tooth sensitivity means experiencing pain or discomfort to your teeth from sweets, cold air, hot drinks, cold drinks or ice cream. Some people with sensitive teeth even experience discomfort from brushing and flossing. The good news is that sensitive teeth can be treated.

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is the experience of tooth pain or discomfort. You may experience this when eating sweets or ice cream, drinking hot or cold beverages, or even being exposed to cold air.

Several factors can contribute to tooth sensitivity, including cavities, gum disease, a fractured tooth or worn enamel. Many teeth whitening procedures can also cause sensitive teeth. If you have tooth sensitivity, be sure to see your dentist. There are several treatment options available that can help reduce the sensitivity. The cause of the sensitivity itself may need to be addressed, as well.

How can you Treat Tooth Sensitivity?

If you have sensitive teeth, talk with your dentist to discuss treatment options and rule out specific dental problems. Once specific dental problems have been ruled out, your dentist might recommend an office fluoride treatment to help strengthen the tooth enamel.

Many times, tooth sensitivity can be treated by using a toothpaste made especially for sensitive teeth, called a desensitizing toothpaste.

How Can Tooth Sensitivity Be Prevented?

Like many other dental problems, the best ways to prevent tooth sensitivity are to get regular dental checkups and to practice good oral hygiene. Brushing properly, at least twice a day, and flossing daily are the best ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Using desensitizing toothpaste for two weeks before any type of bleaching process can also help with the tooth sensitivity that usually accompanies teeth whitening. Be sure to discuss this with your dentist.
